Birchington On Sea

The small town of Birchington is a favoured seaside resort for families and retirees. It has a charming high street providing a range of individual shops, two supermarkets and a variety of pubs and restaurants.

Birchington is built around four sandy bays Minnis Bay to the west, Grenham Bay and Beresford Gap in the centre and Epple Bay to the east and it is renowned as having the first bungalow estate in the country all turreted and all Grade II listed.

In 1882 the Pre-Raphaelite painter and poet, Dante Gabriel Rosetti (sister to poet Christina of ‘In the Bleak Mid Winter’ fame)rented one of the bungalows but died while staying there and was buried in All Saints the 13th century church in the town.

The vast Minnis Bay sandy beach has been awarded a Blue Flag for the cleanliness of its water and, as well as swimming and beach activities, there is also sailing, windsurfing, a paddling pool for the youngsters and coastal walking and cycle routes are available for the more energetic.

The local manor house, Quex Park, is home to the Powell-Cotton family and houses the fabulous collection of African artifacts and diorama collected by the Victoria explorer, Major Powell-Cotton.

Here you will also find an excellent farm shop and restaurant, full of delicious local produce.
